Why won't my car start? Battery, starter or alternator

Nothing ruins a morning in The Villages, Lady Lake, or Oxford like turning the key and getting nothing, or worse, a slow click and silence. Before you call for a tow, it helps to know which of three things is actually going on, since they're easy to tell apart if you know what to listen for.

Dead battery: the most common cause by far

If you turn the key and hear nothing at all, or just a single click, it's very likely the battery. This is especially common after a car sits for a week or two, which happens a lot here when residents split time between home and travel. Dome light dim or not coming on at all is another good sign it's the battery.

Starter problems: a clicking or grinding sound

If you hear rapid clicking, or a grinding sound, but the lights and radio work fine, that points to the starter rather than the battery. The battery has enough charge to run electronics, it just can't turn the engine over.

Alternator problems: it started, but died again

If the car started fine but died again a few minutes or a few miles later, or you noticed the battery warning light on the dash before it happened, that's usually the alternator, not the battery. The alternator charges the battery while you drive, and a failing one lets the battery drain right back down even after a jump.

What a jump tells you

A jump start is actually a decent diagnostic tool. If the car starts and runs fine afterward with no other symptoms, it was likely just a drained battery. If it starts but the same thing happens again soon after, or it won't hold a jump at all, that points toward the starter or alternator instead, and a jump alone won't fix it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bad battery be recharged, or does it need replacing?

Depends on age and condition. A battery that's a few years old and has been deeply drained more than once is usually better replaced than repeatedly recharged.

Is it safe to keep driving if my alternator is failing?

Not for long. Once the alternator can't keep up, the battery drains while you drive, and you risk stalling somewhere far less convenient than your driveway.

Do you diagnose this in the driveway, or do I need a shop?

In the driveway. Battery, starter, and alternator testing are all things I can do on-site with the right equipment, no need to get the car anywhere first.
